So far Ford is being coy about what these models will be, or when we can expect them, but we'll be getting four new SUV nameplates soon.
The reason Ford is adding more SUVs to a lineup already rich with SUV and crossover options is simple: SUVs are popular.
Very popular.
The two biggest age demographics in America are both loyal SUV buyers -- baby boomers, and millennials.
"It's a demographic double whammy and it all points to one thing – more SUVs for the foreseeable future," said Mark LaNeve, Ford Motor Company vice president of Marketing, Sales and Service.
Millennials find SUVs appealing as family vehicles. They've got the spaciousness, seating flexibility, and cargo room, but none of the unflattering stigma carried by minivans. As many millennials who were putting off starting families finally find economic stability, the demand for SUVs has skyrocketed.
Meanwhile, LaNeve explains, "Some SUVs now rival the fuel efficiency of V6-powered midsize sedans from only a few years ago, and as baby boomers grew up with much less capable, much less efficient vehicles, they tend to appreciate the efficiency of Ford’s newest SUVs."
